Gaia-X moveID to showcase peer-to-peer smart mobility at Europe’s largest automotive fair

The live demo involving Bosch, Datarella, deltaDAO, Ocean Protocol, DENSO, Fetch.ai, htw saar, peaq, and 51nodes taps Tesla and Jaguar EVs with decentralized IDs to showcase business models leveraging p2p tech as a cornerstone for a future mobility service ecosystem.

August 15, 2023moveID, a Bosch-led project within the Gaia-X 4 Future Mobility project family, unveils its live demo at the IAA MOBILITY 2023. At the event, moveID will demonstrate via the MOBIX app for peer-to-peer parking and charging a first glimpse of its vision of a decentralized mobility service ecosystem. The demonstration involving Tesla and Jaguar electric vehicles (EVs) will showcase novel mobility services and business opportunities arising from the use of decentralized technologies with integrated payment capabilities. The live demo will show how autonomous transactions between connected devices streamline expenses and add new revenue streams.

As our mobility infrastructure, power grids, and other building blocks make our cities grow smarter, trusted identification of parties is a key challenge to tackle on the journey to unlock the full business potential of connected vehicles — particularly when it comes to Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) communication. The digital mobility infrastructure built by moveID project partners uses Self-Sovereign Identities (SSIs) and enables autonomous transactions between vehicles and connected infrastructure. SSIs efficiently leverage blockchain technology as a vendor-neutral digital backbone and enable connected vehicles, traffic infrastructure, and service providers to transact and create value for humans and one another.

At IAA MOBILITY 2023 in Munich, moveID will showcase the business and impact potential of SSIs issued to vehicles and service providers creating real-world value. At the live demonstration, visitors will try first-hand the process of finding, reserving, and using a parking lot and an EV charging point that is being offered in a peer-to-peer fashion, e.g., by companies allowing access to their parking lots. Behind the scenes, decentralization tools enable a convenient experience with full privacy as the vehicles use their own digital wallets to cover the parking and charging fees.

The following moveID participants will be contributing to the demonstration:

  • As the project lead, Bosch will be providing general organizational and coordination support for the initiative and evaluating its potential for industry adoption based on the model’s performance in the live demo. On top of that Bosch will provide an electric Jaguar powered by a full suite of specialized hardware enabling V2X communications and providing the foundation for automotive-grade self-sovereign identity.

“At moveID, we believe that the best way to imagine the future is to experience it first-hand,” says Peter Busch, moveID Project Lead and Product Owner for Distributed Ledger Technologies (Mobility) at Robert Bosch GmbH. “The demonstration at IAA is meant to do just that, putting the first fruits of our work on public display in a testimony to the feasibility of its underlying vision.”

  • Datarella, a Web3 company builder, will provide its public MOBIX app as the joint user interface and ‘remote control’ for all moveID privacy-preserving functionality. It will leverage Fetch.ai’s AI agents to enable smart interoperability of all underlying technologies.

“Leveraging Fetch.ai’s AI agents to connect different technologies and seeing the distilled result of the agent’s work in our MOBIX app is living proof of the power of the moveID tech stack,” says Datarella CEO Michael Reuter.
  • deltaDAO AG, a Web3 software development, integration, and consulting company, will implement the ability to securely share usage and analytics data and make it visible and accessible in the Gaia-X 4 Future Mobility moveID public decentralized data marketplace powered by Ocean Protocol. Selling anonymized locally-stored data on the Ocean marketplace enables businesses to do away with data silos and unlock an additional GDPR-compliant revenue stream.

“While data is growing evermore important in the age of AI, the currently dominant approach to its harvesting and unilateral exploitation is incompatible with the idea of ownership and privacy. moveID changes this equation, enabling all stakeholders to own their data and use it how they see fit without compromising their privacy,” says Kai Meinke, Co-Founder & Business Lead at deltaDAO AG and Lead of the Gaia-X Open-Source Software Community.

  • Ocean Protocol provides open-source tools for the New Data Economy that enable decentralized data-sharing and secure access to quality data. Ocean technology will allow businesses and individuals in the moveID data ecosystem to safely exchange and monetize data and data-based services with one another and stakeholders in other relevant data spaces while maintaining control over their data.

“Secure data processing is critical to the future of mobility,” says Ocean Protocol Head of Ecosystem & Collaboration Sheridan Johns. “In the case of the moveID IAA demonstrator, key technical features of Ocean Protocol are used to build secure interoperable data ecosystems for offering innovative mobility services such as vehicle parking, vehicle charging, and more.”
  • DENSO, a global mobility supplier that develops advanced automotive technologies, systems, and products, is providing organizational and technical support to the initiative. It is also sponsoring the Alfen Eve Double Pro-line charging station, which will be used in the live demonstration.

“We are excited to showcase this live demo to the wider industry as we see great potential in using privacy-first tech to power the future of mobility. Data is crucial for R&D efforts in the automotive space, but data must be sourced in a secure and compliant way” says Christian Prehofer, Director at DENSO Automotive Germany.
  • Fetch.ai, an open platform that powers peer-to-peer applications with automation and AI capabilities, is providing its autonomous AI agent framework for the live demo. Communicating between AI agents on the peaq network within the Polkadot ecosystem and Fetch’s Cosmos-based ecosystem via multi-chain IDs, the agents will power the interactions between the connected devices, including the vehicles, the charging stations, and the infrastructure to grant the user the optimal SSI-based charging and parking experience.

“The AI agent framework is a powerful and versatile tool with a lot of potential for use in anything involving smart infrastructure and enabling new economic opportunities. We are very excited to see AI agents streamline the charging and parking experience for IAA visitors,” says Maria Minaricova, Director of Business Development at Fetch.ai.
  • The Saarland University of Applied Sciences (Hochschule für Technik und Wirtschaft des Saarlandes, htw saar), a leading German university and research center for applied sciences, is deeply involved in the moveID R&D efforts. It sponsors the hardware for the live demo, including first and foremost one of the two electric vehicles, a Tesla Model X, that the visitors will be able to take for a test drive as part of the display, as well as a special hardware set which enables V2X communication and SSI.

“Europe is leading the way on data privacy, and moveID has the potential to extend this lead into the connected infrastructure space by putting self-sovereign data and identities at its foundation. We are proud to be enabling this on the technical level with Information Communication Technology,” says Niclas Wolniak, Research Manager at htw saar.
  • peaq, the Web3 network powering the Economy of Things, will provide self-sovereign peaq IDs for the connected devices in the demonstration, as well as a decentralized application for peer-to-peer vehicle charging. This dApp will be integrated with the MOBIX app by Datarella. peaq will also provide connectivity with Fetch.ai’s AI agents via its integration.

“As a leading layer-1 blockchain for mobility-focused dApps and decentralized physical infrastructure networks and one of the two layer-1s involved in moveID, peaq fully embraces the push for a Web3 mobility paradigm,” says Leonard Dorlöchter, co-founder of peaq.
  • 51nodes, a Web3 software integration company, is implementing the full workflows involving Self-Sovereign Identities and verifiable credentials and their exchange among vehicles and service providers. On the backend side, the walt.id SSI framework is used for realizing decentralized identities and wallets. The SSI workflows will enable the use of verifiable driver credentials for booking parking slots during the live demo.

“In this prototype development, we are using the existing SSI technologies to demonstrate their technical feasibility, better assess their capabilities, and identify the potential for improvement. In addition, collaboration with the different partners in moveID is a very exciting task for us,” says Jochen Kaßberger, Managing Director and co-founder of 51nodes.

While the demonstration focuses on the mobility industry, the business model, which will be prepared by the Center for Mobility Studies (Zeppelin University) can be implemented in a wide array of industries, such as public-to-private power grid interplay and smart supply chain management. The moveID project invites all stakeholders in the EV charging ecosystem to participate and make their individual charging solution part of the overall charging network.

“The live demo at IAA MOBILITY will clearly demonstrate the vision behind Gaia-X 4 moveID in the most tangible and clear-cut way possible — by letting the users experience the future it aims for. We are excited to bring this live demo to Munich and look forward to showcasing it to business and policy decision-makers from around the world,” says Peter Busch.

The project Gaia-X 4 moveID was started in July 2022 and is fiscally supported by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action over a three-year period.
